When Should You Go? It Depends on What You Want to Do
Morocco, Spain and Portugal sit across two major climate zones — the Mediterranean and the Atlantic — plus Morocco's High Atlas creates its own alpine microclimate. The "best" time to visit depends entirely on what you plan to do. The sweet spot for hiking in the Atlas Mountains is different from the ideal window for surfing in Portugal, which is different again from camping in Andalusia.
This guide breaks down the best seasons for every major outdoor activity across all three countries, so you can plan your trip around exactly what you want to do.

Morocco: The High Atlas Shapes Everything
Morocco's climate is defined by the Atlas Mountains, which run diagonally across the country from the Atlantic coast to the Algerian border. The mountains create stark contrasts: the Atlantic coast is mild year-round, the interior is scorching in summer and cold in winter, and the Sahara is extreme in every season.
Hiking in Morocco
Best: March to May and September to November
The ideal hiking season in Morocco is spring and autumn. In spring (March to May), the High Atlas valleys are green and carpeted with wildflowers. Snow lingers on the highest peaks (Jbel Toubkal at 4,167m holds snow well into June), but the lower trails above Imlil are clear by April. Daytime temperatures at 2,000–3,000m range from 15–22°C — perfect for trekking.
Autumn (September to November) offers similar conditions. The summer heat has broken, the sky is clear, and the mountain light is spectacular. November is the best month for photography — the low angle of the sun creates long shadows that emphasise the mountain's contours.
Avoid: June to August. The low valleys and the Marrakech region are brutally hot (40°C+). High-altitude trekking is possible if you start before dawn, but it's a sufferfest, not a pleasure.
Best trails for each season:
- Spring: Toubkal National Park — wildflowers, waterfalls, snow-capped peaks
- Autumn: Ammeln Valley — perfect light, local harvest season
- Winter (low-altitude): Paradise Valley — mild enough for December hiking
Camping in Morocco
Best: March to May and October
Camping in Morocco follows the hiking seasons closely. Spring and autumn offer comfortable overnight temperatures (10–18°C depending on altitude). The camping in Ait Oudinar and other High Atlas sites are at their best in April and May.
October is the hidden gem month for camping — the summer crowds are gone, the days are warm, the nights are cool, and the stars are extraordinary.
Avoid: July and August (too hot) and December to February (too cold for comfortable camping, especially at altitude).
Surfing in Morocco
Best: October to April
Morocco's Atlantic coast comes alive in winter. The Taghazout stretch — from Anchor Point to the northern points — gets consistent swell from October through April. Water temperatures range from 17°C in winter to 21°C in autumn, so a 3/2 wetsuit is sufficient.
The best months for experienced surfers are December to February, when the Atlantic swell is strongest. Beginners should target October or March-April for smaller, more manageable waves.
Best spots by season:
- Winter (experienced): Anchor Point — consistent, powerful right-hand point break
- Autumn/Spring (beginners): Surf Camp Morocco — smaller waves, sandy bottom, lessons available
Spain: Four Distinct Climates in One Country
Spain's climate varies dramatically by region. The green north (Galicia, Asturias, Basque Country) is Atlantic and rainy. The Mediterranean coast (Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia) is hot and dry. The interior (Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha) is continental with extreme temperatures. Andalusia is semi-arid with very hot summers.
Hiking in Spain
Best: March to June and September to November
Spring in Spain is hiking paradise. The wildflowers in the Picos de Europa and the Sierra Nevada are at their peak in May and June. The weather is warm but not hot, and the trails are less crowded than summer.
Autumn is equally good. September and October bring golden light, harvest season in the villages, and comfortable temperatures. The Andalusia Hiking Trails guide covers the best routes in southern Spain.
Regional breakdown:
| Region | Best Season | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Picos de Europa (north) | Jun–Sep | Snow clears by June, best weather July–August |
| Sierra Nevada (south) | May–Jun, Sep–Oct | Too hot in July–August, snowy in winter |
| Pyrenees | Jun–Sep | High altitude, late snowmelt |
| Andalusia (low-altitude) | Mar–May, Oct–Nov | Avoid summer heat entirely |
Camping in Spain
Best: April to June and September to October
Spain has excellent camping infrastructure, from beachside campsites in the Algarve-style Costa del Sol to mountain sites in the Pyrenees. Spring and autumn offer the best balance of warm days and cool nights.
Summer camping is possible in the north (Galicia, Asturias, the Pyrenees) but uncomfortable in the interior and south. The campsites in Spain range from basic mountain refuges to fully equipped coastal resorts.
Surfing in Spain
Best: October to April
Spain's best surf is on the Atlantic coast — the Basque Country, Cantabria, and Galicia. The Mediterranean has surf too, but it's smaller and less consistent. October to April brings the strongest Atlantic swell. The best surf towns in Spain include Mundaka, Zarautz, and San Sebastián.
Best spots by season:
- Winter: Mundaka Barra Surf — world-class left-hand point break, best October–March
- Spring: Zarautz — long, consistent beach break, good for intermediates
Portugal: The Atlantic Coast Dictates Everything
Portugal's climate is Atlantic-Mediterranean. The coast is mild year-round with rain in winter, while the interior Alentejo and Algarve are hotter and drier. The north is significantly rainier than the south.
Hiking in Portugal
Best: March to June and September to October
Portugal's hiking trails are at their best in spring and autumn. The 7 Valleys Hiking Trail in the Algarve is spectacular in April and May when the wildflowers are in bloom and the temperature is 20–25°C.
Autumn (September–October) is the best time for hiking in Portugal's interior — the Rota Vicentina, the Alentejo, and the Serra da Estrela. The light is golden, the temperatures are comfortable, and the crowds are gone.
Avoid: July and August. Coastal trails are exposed and hot, interior trails are scorching, and the Algarve is overrun with tourists.
Camping in Portugal
Best: April to June and September to October
Portugal's campsites are some of the best in Europe, particularly in the Algarve and along the Costa Vicentina. Spring and autumn offer perfect camping conditions. The best camping spots in Portugal include coastal sites with direct beach access and inland sites in the cork oak forests of the Alentejo.
Surfing in Portugal
Best: October to March
Portugal is one of the best surf destinations in Europe. The Atlantic swell hits the entire coast, with the most consistent waves from October to March. Water temperatures range from 14°C in winter to 18°C in autumn (a 4/3 wetsuit is recommended for winter).
Best spots by season:
- Winter (advanced): Ericeira — World Surfing Reserve, powerful waves
- Winter (all levels): Peniche — Supertubos is world-class, but the area has waves for every level
- Autumn/Spring (beginners): Algarve surf spots — smaller, more manageable waves, warmer water
