Anchor Point Taghazout
Taghazout, Souss-Massa
Anchor Point is the wave that put Taghazout on the global surf map. This legendary right-hand point break peels along the rocky headland at the northern end of Taghazout Bay, producing long, rifling walls that can run for up to 300 metres on a solid north-west swell. When conditions align, Anchor Point offers some of the longest rides in Africa, with a steep, powerful take-off that leads into a fast, race-track wall perfect for carving, re-entries, and the occasional barrel section. It is the most famous wave in Morocco and a bucket-list break for surfers from around the world.
The wave breaks over a rocky reef that extends from the point, wrapping around the headland to create a consistently shaped right-hander. Anchor Point works on a wide range of swell directions and sizes, from 3 feet to well over 12 feet, making it one of the most reliable waves in the region. The take-off is critical — positioning and timing are everything — and the wave rewards surfers with solid intermediate skills and above. Beginners will find the paddle-out challenging and the crowd competitive, but for those with the ability, Anchor Point delivers rides that are genuinely world-class.
The break is easily accessible, just a short walk from the centre of Taghazout village, and it sits directly in front of several surf camps and cafés that line the shore. The local surf community is welcoming but respectful of the pecking order in the water, and the vibe is one of shared stoke rather than aggression. The best conditions come with a north-west to west swell combined with an easterly offshore wind, typically from October through April when the Atlantic swell machine is at full power. Summer brings smaller, cleaner conditions that are less consistent but still rideable on the right swell. Anchor Point is not just a wave — it is the spiritual heart of Moroccan surfing.
