Ericeira Surf — Surfing in Portugal

Ericeira Surf

Ericeira, Mafra, Lisbon Coast

Ericeira is one of the world's most celebrated surf destinations and holds the prestigious status of a World Surfing Reserve — one of only a handful globally. Located just 45 minutes north of Lisbon, this historic fishing village has evolved into a surf mecca without losing its authentic Portuguese character. The coastline around Ericeira is blessed with an extraordinary concentration of world-class waves, from the long, peeling rights of Coxos — a wave that has hosted multiple World Surf League qualifying events — to the powerful reef breaks of Pedra Branca and the consistent beach break of Ribeira d'Ilhas.

The surf scene in Ericeira is legendary. Coxos is the crown jewel — a long, fast right-hand point break that wraps around a rocky headland and delivers rides of up to 200 metres on a good swell. It is a wave for experienced surfers, with a take-off that demands precision and timing, and a wall that rewards powerful carving and tube riding. Pedra Branca, just around the corner, is a thick, hollow reef break that barrels heavily on the right swell — strictly for advanced surfers. Ribeira d'Ilhas, a long sandy beach break, offers more forgiving waves for intermediate surfers and has hosted the World Surf League's QS events, cementing its place in competitive surfing history.

Beyond the waves, Ericeira is a genuine Portuguese fishing village with whitewashed buildings, cobbled streets, and a harbour full of colourful fishing boats. The seafood is exceptional — fresh grilled fish, octopus, and the famous local clams are served in restaurants overlooking the ocean. The town has a relaxed, welcoming vibe that blends traditional Portuguese culture with an international surf community. With consistent Atlantic swell from September through April, easy access from Lisbon, and some of the most famous waves in Europe, Ericeira is an essential destination for any surfer visiting Portugal.
