7 Valleys Hike

Lagoa, Algarve

The 7 Valleys Hike is the Algarve's quintessential coastal walking experience, tracing the ragged edge where golden limestone cliffs meet the deep blue Atlantic between Marina da Lagoa and Praia da Marinha. The trail follows the clifftop closely, rising and falling through seven distinct valleys carved by ancient streams, each opening onto a secluded cove or beach that is entirely inaccessible by road. The contrast of warm stone, white sand and vivid turquoise water is striking at every turn.

Among the most memorable sights along the route is the Benagil Cave, a spectacular sea grotto with a collapsed roof that forms a natural skylight. While the cave is best explored by kayak or paddleboard, the clifftop trail offers dramatic elevated views of its entrance and the surrounding rock arches. Spring brings a carpet of wildflowers — yellow broom, lavender sea daffodils and magenta cistus — that scent the air between the sea salt spray.

The hike is best undertaken in the cooler months of spring or autumn, as summer heat can be punishing on the exposed clifftops. The point-to-point nature of the route makes a shuttle or taxi return from Praia da Marinha the most practical option. Allow three to four hours for the full traverse, with ample stops for photographs and dipping into any of the accessible coves along the way.
