Picos de Europa Coastal Route — Hiking in Spain

Picos de Europa Coastal Route

Asturias / Cantabria / Castile and León

The Picos de Europa Coastal Route is a spectacular multi-day traverse connecting the northern edge of the Picos de Europa National Park with the dramatic limestone heart of the massif. Starting from the picturesque villages that dot the foothills near the Cantabrian coast, the route climbs steadily through deep river gorges, past traditional cheese-making farms, and up into the high alpine terrain that makes this national park one of Spain's most treasured natural wonders. The contrast between the emerald-green lowlands and the grey, jagged peaks of the central massif is breathtaking from the very first day.

The route passes through some of the most iconic landscapes in northern Spain. A highlight is the section through the Cares Gorge, a vertiginous trail carved into the canyon wall high above the Cares River — often called the "Divine Gorge" for its sheer scale and beauty. Further on, the trail climbs to high passes with panoramic views stretching all the way to the Cantabrian Sea, offering a unique perspective that few other routes in the Picos can match. Along the way, hikers pass through traditional Asturian villages where the local Cabrales blue cheese and hard cider are served in rustic sidrerías that have been operating for generations.

The route is best hiked between June and September when the weather is most stable and the mountain refuges are open. The terrain is moderate but demanding over the full distance, with significant elevation changes and exposed sections that require good fitness and proper hiking boots. Navigation is straightforward on the well-marked GR trail network, and accommodation is available at mountain refuges and village guesthouses along the way. This is a quintessential Spanish mountain experience — a journey through landscapes that have inspired poets and pilgrims for centuries.
