Three countries, endless adventures

Outdoors Atlas brings together 225 hand-picked outdoor locations across three countries that share a coastline, a passion for the outdoors and some of the most varied terrain in the Northern Hemisphere. Each destination has its own character — from the lunar high-altitude landscapes of Morocco's High Atlas to the granite gorges of Spain's Picos de Europa and the sun-bleached surf coastline of Portugal's Algarve.

Morocco is where the Atlas Mountains meet the Sahara. Our 69 locations cover hiking trails through Berber villages and walnut groves, campsites on the edge of the dunes at Erg Chebbi, surf breaks along the Taghazout stretch of the Atlantic, and viewpoints from the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen to the cascades of Ouzoud. The best time to visit depends on the activity — spring and autumn work across the board.

Spain is our largest destination with 77 locations, spanning hiking routes from the Caminito del Rey and the Picos de Europa to the Sierra Nevada ridges, campsites along the Costa Brava and in the Pyrenean foothills, and world-class surf on the Atlantic coast of Cantabria and Galicia. Spain's viewpoint collection alone — from the Alhambra miradores to the cliffs of Ronda — makes it a photographer's destination.

Portugal has 79 locations concentrated along its extraordinary coastline and interior. Hike the famous Passadiços do Paiva, the Fishermen's Trail on the Algarve coast, or the levada trails of Madeira. Camp in the cork-oak forests of the Alentejo or beside the surf breaks of Ericeira and Peniche. Portuguese viewpoints — the miradouros of Lisbon, the cliffs of Cabo da Roca — offer some of the most dramatic scenery in Europe.

Every location on Outdoors Atlas comes with difficulty ratings, seasonal recommendations, coordinates and local tips. Use the country guides below to dive into each destination, or explore all locations on the interactive map.
