Subida Barranco de la Senda
Orihuela, Alicante
The Subida Barranco de la Senda is a demanding but rewarding ascent through the Sierra de Orihuela, a compact mountain range that rises abruptly from the Vega Baja del Segura plain in the province of Alicante. The trail follows a dry ravine — the Barranco de la Senda — climbing steeply through rocky terrain from the outskirts of Orihuela up into the heart of the mountains. This is not a walk for beginners: the gradient is sustained, the footing is uneven, and sections require careful navigation over loose scree and boulders. But for those who make the effort, the payoff is exceptional — sweeping views across the Segura valley, the lagoons of Torrevieja, and the Mediterranean Sea stretching to the horizon.
The trail starts near the Santuario de la Virgen de la Salud, a historic sanctuary just outside Orihuela, and immediately begins its ascent into the barranco. The ravine walls are composed of rugged limestone and dolomite, with interesting geological features including small caves, overhangs, and fossil impressions visible in the rock. The vegetation is classic Mediterranean mountain scrub — kermes oak, mastic, juniper, rosemary, and thyme — with Aleppo pines scattered along the drier slopes. In spring, the trail is lined with flowering rock roses, lavender, and various orchids. As you climb, the vegetation thins and the rocky landscape becomes more exposed, with the sound of wind replacing the birdsong of the lower slopes.
The full ascent covers about 5 kilometres with an elevation gain of approximately 400–500 metres, depending on the exact route taken. At the top, the ridge connects to the wider network of trails in the Sierra de Orihuela, allowing for longer hikes if desired. The best conditions are between October and May — summer is generally too hot for this exposed south-facing ascent, and the midday sun can be punishing even in spring. Early morning starts are recommended both for the temperature and for the spectacular quality of the light as the sun rises over the coastal plain. Sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, and a good map or GPS are essential, as the trail is not as well-marked as the more popular hiking routes in the region.
