Alto del Mojón

Madrid

Alto del Mojón is a satisfying hiking destination within easy reach of Madrid, situated in the rolling foothills that transition from the urban fringe into the broader Sierra de Guadarrama landscape. The trail forms part of the Senda Ecológica network, a system of signposted routes designed to promote sustainable outdoor recreation in the Madrid region. The ascent passes through a mosaic of holm oak groves, stands of maritime pine, and open scrubland that supports a surprising diversity of bird and insect life.

The climb to the summit is steady but not punishing, gaining around 250 metres over 3 kilometres. As you rise, the views open up across the Madrid countryside — to the south, the skyline of the city shimmers in the distance, while to the north the higher peaks of the Sierra de Guadarrama, including Siete Picos and La Maliciosa, come into view. The summit of Alto del Mojón itself is marked by a modest cairn and offers a peaceful spot to rest and take in the panorama before retracing your steps or continuing along the connecting Senda Ecológica loops.

With a round trip of 6 kilometres, this hike is well-suited to a half-day outing from Madrid. The trails are well-maintained and clearly marked, making navigation straightforward even for those unfamiliar with the area. The surrounding forest shelters rabbits, red squirrels, and a variety of passerine birds, while raptors such as the common kestrel hunt over the open slopes. Alto del Mojón offers a quiet, accessible taste of the Madrid countryside without the crowds found at some of the more famous Sierra de Guadarrama destinations.
