Sendero Río Majaceite

The Sendero Río Majaceite is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful easy walks in Andalusia, a gentle riverside stroll through the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. The trail follows the Río Majaceite from the village of El Bosque to the neighbouring village of Benamahoma, tracking the river for about 3 kilometres each way (6 kilometres round trip). What makes this walk so special is its setting — the path is almost entirely shaded by a dense canopy of alder, ash, poplar, and willow trees that form a gallery forest along the riverbanks, creating a cool, green tunnel even on the hottest Andalusian summer days.

The walk is nearly flat, with only minor elevation changes, making it accessible to almost everyone — families with young children, older walkers, and casual visitors alike. The path hugs the river closely, crossing it several times via wooden footbridges that offer views of the crystal-clear water flowing over smooth limestone bedrock. Along the way, you'll encounter small cascades and natural pools where the water collects in deep turquoise basins, perfect for a refreshing dip on a warm day. The water is clean enough to drink from mountain springs along the route. The sound of rushing water accompanies you throughout the walk, punctuated by birdsong from the abundant wildlife that lives in this riparian corridor.

The walk typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours one way at a leisurely pace. Many walkers arrange transport or leave a car at each end, though it is perfectly pleasant to walk to Benamahoma, explore the village, and return by the same route. Benamahoma itself is a classic pueblo blanco with narrow streets, a village square with a fountain, and several bars where walkers can enjoy a cold drink or a simple meal. The best time for this walk is spring (March–June) when the river is at its fullest and the vegetation is at its most lush, or autumn (September–November) when the light filters beautifully through the turning leaves. The trail can be muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes or boots are recommended despite the easy terrain.
