Sendero Litoral

Sitio de Calahonda, Costa del Sol

This section of the Sendero Litoral runs through the Sitio de Calahonda, a residential and tourist area on the Mijas Costa between Fuengirola and Marbella. The path follows the coastline for approximately 3.5 kilometres, offering an easy, flat walk with constant sea views and easy access to the beaches below. Unlike some of the more developed sections of the Costa del Sol, this stretch retains a relatively natural character, with rocky headlands separating small sandy coves where local residents come to enjoy the quieter end of the coastline. The path is part of the ambitious Senda Litoral project, which when completed will connect the entire Málaga coast from Nerja to Manilva.

The trail is well-maintained and mostly paved, making it suitable for all fitness levels and accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs. It passes through areas of coastal scrub and low pine woodland, with benches placed at regular intervals for resting and enjoying the view. Several stairways lead down from the main path to the beaches below, including the popular Playa de Calahonda and the smaller Cala del Moral. Along the route, information boards describe the local marine and coastal ecology, including the Posidonia seagrass meadows that grow offshore and the bird species that frequent the shoreline, such as cormorants, gulls, and occasionally oystercatchers.

The walk is particularly pleasant in the late afternoon when the sun lowers over the sea and the coastal breeze picks up. The best season is autumn through spring (October to May), when the weather is warm but not hot. During summer, early morning or evening walks are recommended to avoid the intensity of the midday sun. The path connects with the marina at Cabopino to the east and continues toward the beaches of Mijas Costa to the west, offering the possibility of extending the walk in either direction. There are several cafés and beach bars near the access points where walkers can stop for refreshments while enjoying the sea views.
