Sendero Inicio
Benalmádena, Costa del Sol
Sendero Inicio in Benalmádena serves as the gateway to a network of hiking trails that climb from the Costa del Sol into the Sierra de Mijas, the mountain range that forms the dramatic backdrop to the coastal towns of Fuengirola, Benalmádena, and Mijas. The trailhead is located at the edge of the urban area, where the roads give way to dirt tracks and the landscape transitions from suburban development into open Mediterranean hillside. From here, walkers can choose from a variety of routes ranging from short 2-kilometre loops ideal for a morning stretch to longer 6-kilometre excursions that reach higher into the mountains for more extensive views.
The vegetation along the trails is typical of the Mediterranean maquis — low, dense scrub dominated by rockrose, gorse, thyme, rosemary, and kermes oak, interspersed with Aleppo pines and wild olive trees. In spring, the hillsides are dotted with colourful wildflowers including lavender, asphodel, and various species of orchid. The trails climb steadily through this fragrant landscape, with the sound of cicadas filling the air in warmer months and the occasional glimpse of rabbits, partridges, and lizards among the rocks. The higher sections of the trail offer increasingly expansive views over the coastline, and on exceptionally clear days it is possible to see the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar.
The best time to hike here is between October and May, when the temperatures are comfortable and the Mediterranean light is at its best. Summer hiking is possible but requires an early start to avoid the heat, as there is little shade on the exposed hillsides. The trails are generally well-marked but a GPS or map app is recommended for first-time visitors, particularly if planning a longer route. The proximity to Benalmádena's amenities means hikers can easily combine a morning walk with a visit to the town's famous marina, the Tivoli World amusement park, or the Stupa of Enlightenment, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in Europe.
