Senda de los Pantaneros
Chulilla, Valencia
The Senda de los Pantaneros, or Trail of the Dam Keepers, is one of the most spectacular and popular gorge hikes in the Valencia region. Starting from the charming village of Chulilla, the circular route descends into the Turia River canyon, where towering limestone cliffs rise hundreds of metres on either side. The trail takes its name from the workers who once maintained the reservoirs and dams upstream, navigating this dramatic gorge long before it became a hiking destination. The highlight of the route is a pair of suspension bridges that swing high above the turquoise waters of the Turia.
The path hugs the canyon walls, in places carved directly into the vertical rock face with a metal handrail anchored into the cliff. Crossing the first suspension bridge is an exhilarating experience — the boardwalk sways gently beneath your feet as you take in the sheer scale of the gorge, with vultures circling overhead and the river shimmering far below. The trail continues along the opposite bank, passing natural pools where hikers often stop for a swim in the cool, clear water during warmer months. The second bridge brings the loop back to the Chulilla side.
At 6 kilometres circular with a moderate elevation gain, the Senda de los Pantaneros can be completed in roughly 2 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace. The trail is busiest on weekends and holidays, so arriving early is recommended to secure parking and enjoy the gorge in relative peace. Chulilla itself is a picturesque hilltop village with narrow streets and excellent local restaurants serving regional specialities. This hike offers an unforgettable combination of geological drama, engineering ingenuity, and natural beauty just an hour west of Valencia.
