Mirador de las Canchas
Navacerrada, Madrid
Mirador de las Canchas is a beautiful viewpoint trail situated in the Sierra de Guadarrama near the mountain town of Navacerrada, just over an hour from Madrid. The route starts from the area around the Puerto de Navacerrada pass, one of the most popular gateways to the Guadarrama range, and follows a well-defined path through high-altitude pine forest before emerging onto an open ridge with commanding views. The mirador itself faces south and west, overlooking the deep valleys of the Navacerrada and La Barranca, with the distant peaks of the Sierra de Gredos visible on the clearest days.
The trail is gentle enough for families with children and casual walkers, while still offering enough elevation gain to feel like a proper mountain outing. The forest sections are shaded and cool, with Scots pines and mountain juniper providing a fragrant backdrop. In autumn, the lower slopes where beech and oak mix with the conifers put on a spectacular display of gold and copper. Listen for the calls of crested tits and firecrests in the canopy, and keep an eye on the cliffs above for nesting griffon vultures.
At 5 kilometres round trip, the Mirador de las Canchas hike can be comfortably completed in under two hours, leaving time for a meal in Navacerrada or a visit to the nearby La Barranca recreation area. The proximity to Madrid and the well-maintained trail make it an excellent choice for a spontaneous mountain excursion. Whether you visit in summer for the cool alpine air, in autumn for the foliage, or in winter for the snow-dusted pines, the mirador offers a rewarding mountain panorama with minimal effort.
