Minas de Ocre Trailhead
Altea, Alicante
The Minas de Ocre trailhead near Altea opens onto one of the Costa Blanca's most visually striking hikes. The route climbs through the Sierra de Bèrnia, a limestone massif that rises steeply from the Mediterranean shoreline. The trail is named for the ochre mines that operated here in the early 20th century, extracting the iron-rich red and yellow pigments used in paints and ceramics. The mineral deposits stain the cliffs and boulders in vivid earth tones, creating a landscape that feels almost otherworldly against the deep blue of the sea beyond.
As you ascend, the path threads through a fragrant maquis of rosemary, thyme, and gorse, interspersed with Aleppo pines and carob trees. After a steady climb, you reach the abandoned mine workings where adits cut into the hillside and rusted machinery remains in place, testament to the area's industrial past. The ochre-rich earth underfoot stains the trail itself, and in places the rock faces are streaked with orange, yellow, and deep red bands. The views across the bay towards Altea's whitewashed old town and the distant Peñón de Ifach are simply breathtaking.
The round trip of 5 kilometres involves a moderate elevation gain on well-defined but rocky terrain, making sturdy footwear essential. The best time to visit is spring or autumn when temperatures are mild and the wildflowers carpet the lower slopes. Combine the hike with a swim at one of Altea's coves or a meal in the historic old town. The Minas de Ocre trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, industrial heritage, and coastal panoramas on the Mediterranean coast.
