Arrifana Surf School & Camp

Aljezur, Algarve

Arrifana Surf School & Camp occupies a spectacular position on the cliffs overlooking Praia da Arrifana, one of the most photographed surf beaches in Portugal. The beach is a sheltered horseshoe bay framed by high, dark cliffs, with a consistent right-hand wave that peels off the northern headland and wraps into the bay. Standing on the camp's terrace, watching the lines of swell march in from the Atlantic while seabirds wheel overhead, is a reminder of just how special the Vicentine Coast really is.

The surf at Arrifana is versatile. The main break — the right-hander off the north headland — works best on a northwest swell with easterly winds and produces long, rippable walls that can barrel in the right conditions. On smaller days, or when the wind shifts, the beach itself offers multiple peaks that are perfect for beginners and intermediates. The school's instructors are experienced and patient, teaching everything from first pop-ups to advanced tube-riding technique. The lesson structure is progressive and safety-conscious, with a strong emphasis on ocean awareness and etiquette.

The camp accommodation consists of modern, minimalist rooms built into the cliffside, with large windows that frame the ocean view. The common areas are open and airy, designed to blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. The on-site restaurant serves fresh, locally sourced food with an emphasis on Portuguese seafood and vegetarian options, and the evening yoga sessions on the terrace — with the sound of the waves below — are a restorative end to a day in the water. Arrifana is the kind of place where you find yourself extending your stay, unwilling to leave the magic of this extraordinary coastline.

## Arrifana Wave The right-hander at Arrifana works best with a northwest swell (2-4 metres) and east-to-northeast winds. Mid-to-high tide produces the best shape. The wave breaks over a sand-and-rock bottom and can barrel on the right conditions. Long rides of 100-200 metres are common.

## The Beach Arrifana beach is a lifeguard-patrolled Blue Flag beach during summer. Facilities include parking, showers, and several cafes and restaurants on the cliffs above the beach. The surrounding cliffs are part of the Vicentine Coast Natural Park and offer excellent hiking with breathtaking views.

## Booking The camp operates from March to November. Weekly packages include accommodation, meals, daily surf coaching, equipment, yoga, and transfers from Lisbon or Faro airports. Weekend and midweek packages are also available.
