Caparica Surf School
Costa da Caparica, Lisbon
Caparica Surf School is one of the most popular surf schools on Costa da Caparica, serving the thousands of surfers — from complete beginners to seasoned locals — who flock to Lisbon's surf coast every day. The school is based at the main beach, with a dedicated area on the sand where students meet, stretch, and receive their pre-session briefing before paddling out. The atmosphere is energetic and welcoming, with instructors who speak multiple languages and have a genuine passion for sharing the stoke of surfing.
The waves at Costa da Caparica are ideal for the school's model. The long, uninterrupted stretch of sand produces a constantly shifting series of peaks, and the instructors know exactly where to position students for the best learning conditions. Beginners start on the inside, where the waves have already broken and reformed into gentle whitewater, allowing them to focus on their pop-up and stance without worrying about timing. As they progress, they move to the outside peaks where they practice catching the wave at the moment of break.
The school's location is a huge draw. Costa da Caparica is just a 20-minute drive from central Lisbon, or 30 minutes by bus. This means you can stay in the city and still enjoy a full morning or afternoon surf session with ease. For visitors to Lisbon who want to fit in a surf lesson without committing to a full surf trip, Caparica Surf School is the perfect solution — world-class instruction on Europe's doorstep, with the great city of Lisbon waiting at the end of the session.
## Lesson Structure Group lessons run for 2 hours and include theory, practice, and free surfing. Private lessons offer one-on-one coaching and can be tailored to specific goals. Multi-lesson packages provide a structured progression through the basics.
## Equipment The school provides all equipment: soft-top and hard boards from 7ft to 9ft, wetsuits (3/2mm and 4/3mm), and rash vests. The equipment is changed regularly to maintain quality and hygiene.
## Surfing Costa da Caparica The prevailing north wind creates offshore conditions that hold the waves open and clean. The best time for surfing is from September to April, but the beach is surfable year-round. Summer brings smaller, cleaner waves that are ideal for beginners and longboarders.
