Rio da Mula
Sintra, Lisbon
The Rio da Mula trail follows its namesake river — the "Mule River" — through the deep, green heart of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Beginning near the village of Alcabideche, the path winds along the riverbank beneath a dense canopy of oak, pine and eucalyptus, with cork trees adding their distinctive textured bark to the forest palette. The constant sound of running water and the cool, shaded microclimate make this a superb escape from Lisbon's summer heat.
Historic water mills dot the route, their stone walls and wooden water wheels now abandoned but still evocative of an era when the river powered the local economy. The trail is generally easy, with only gentle gradients and a well-defined path, though sections near the river can be muddy after rain. Birdlife is rich — look for firecrests, wrens and woodpeckers in the canopy, and grey herons stalking the shallows. Wild boar tracks in the soft mud are a common sight, evidence of the park's healthy wildlife population.
The Rio da Mula trail is part of a larger network of paths that crisscross the Sintra hills, and the more adventurous can extend the walk to connect with the Barragem do Rio da Mula loop or the trails up towards the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace. It is a wonderful choice for a half-day excursion combining nature with the cultural riches of Sintra, and the shaded trajectory makes it enjoyable even in the middle of the day.
