Ludo Trail

The Ludo Trail offers a quieter, more intimate journey through the Ria Formosa salt pans than its famous neighbour, the Faro Boardwalk. Beginning near the Quinta do Lago estate, the trail follows a wide gravel service road that borders the ancient salt-harvesting ponds, then transitions onto wooden boardwalks where it crosses the more sensitive marsh areas. The route is popular with both walkers and cyclists, and the flat terrain makes it accessible to nearly anyone.

The salt pans are the defining feature of this landscape. They have been worked since Roman times, and the traditional methods are still in use today — water is channelled through a series of shallow evaporation ponds, with salt crystallising in the final basins. The varying salinity levels create striking colour gradients from pale blue to burnt umber, and the white salt pyramids at harvest time are a photographer's dream. Birds thrive in this environment: flamingos filter-feed in the deeper ponds, while avocets and black-tailed godwits probe the mudflats.

At the far end of the trail, a wooden lookout platform overlooks the lagoon and the distant ocean sandbars. This makes an excellent turnaround point for a picnic before retracing the route. The Ludo Trail is best enjoyed in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and the bird activity peaks, and it pairs perfectly with a visit to the nearby Quinta do Lago beach.
