Ciclovia das Salinas de Tavira

The Ciclovia das Salinas de Tavira offers a gentle, flat route through one of the Algarve's most evocative landscapes — the historic salt pans that have been harvesting sea salt for over a thousand years. The path runs between the salt evaporation ponds and crystallisation basins, where shallow water reflects the ever-changing Algarve sky, and geometric mounds of pure white salt await collection by workers continuing a tradition that dates back to Roman and Phoenician times.

This is one of the finest birdwatching walks in southern Portugal. The saline lagoons attract vast numbers of wading birds and waterfowl, including elegant greater flamingos that feed in the shallows, along with avocets, black-winged stilts, little egrets, and purple herons. In winter, the salt pans host significant populations of migratory ducks and waders, making every visit different depending on the season.

The flat, well-maintained surface makes the ciclovia suitable for walkers, cyclists, and wheelchair users alike. At 14 km out-and-back (or one-way if you arrange transport), it can be done as a leisurely two-hour walk or a quick bike ride from Tavira town centre. Sunset is the magic hour — the low light turns the salt pans into a mosaic of pink, gold, and silver, with the silhouettes of flamingos wading through the reflective water.
