God's Bridge Canyon

God's Bridge Canyon, known locally as "Pont de Dieu," is a breathtaking natural stone arch carved through the limestone bedrock of the Rif Mountains near Chefchaouen. Spanning approximately 20 metres across and rising over 30 metres above the river below, this geological wonder is the crown jewel of the Akchour trail network. The bridge was formed over countless millennia as the Oued Farda river gradually eroded a meander through the rock, eventually cutting through to create a natural arch that allows the river to flow beneath while the land bridge above remains intact. The result is a dramatic, cathedral-like space where light filters through the arch and illuminates the deep green pool at its base.

Reaching God's Bridge requires a hike of approximately two to three hours from the Akchour trailhead, continuing past the main waterfalls into the upper reaches of the canyon. The trail follows the river upstream, crossing and re-crossing the water over stone steps and simple bridges, and becomes progressively wilder and more remote as you leave the main falls behind. The final approach is particularly dramatic — the canyon narrows, the limestone walls rise steeply on either side, and the sound of the river echoes off the rock faces. Emerging into the open chamber beneath the bridge is a genuinely awe-inspiring moment, one that rewards the effort of the trek with a view that few visitors to Morocco ever experience.

The natural pool beneath the arch is deep enough for swimming in the warmer months, and the smooth rock ledges on either side provide perfect spots for picnicking and sunbathing. The entire area retains a wonderfully wild character — there are no cafés, vendors, or infrastructure beyond the trail itself, so visitors should come prepared with food, water, and appropriate footwear. The best time to visit is during spring (March to May) when the river flow is strong and the surrounding vegetation is at its greenest, or in autumn (September to November) when the temperatures are ideal for the longer hike. Given its relatively remote location and the effort required to reach it, God's Bridge sees far fewer visitors than the lower Akchour waterfalls, offering a truly rewarding wilderness experience.
