Akchour Waterfalls

Akchour Waterfalls lie nestled in the rugged Rif Mountains, approximately 30 kilometres southeast of the famous blue city of Chefchaouen. This series of cascading waterfalls follows the flow of the Oued Farda river through a narrow limestone gorge, creating a sequence of emerald-green pools connected by smooth rock slides and small drops. The setting is remarkably picturesque — the surrounding hillsides are blanketed with pine, cedar, and cork oak forests, while the riverbed itself is lined with smooth, water-worn boulders in warm shades of ochre and grey. The main waterfall, known as the "Grand Cascade," drops roughly 30 metres into a deep pool that invites swimming on hot afternoons.

The trail to reach the waterfalls begins at the small village of Akchour, winding alongside the river for about 40 minutes to an hour depending on pace. The path is well-defined and suitable for most fitness levels, crossing the river several times over simple footbridges and stepping stones. Along the way, several smaller cascades and plunge pools provide natural rest stops, and enterprising locals have set up rustic cafés with wooden platforms overlooking the water where you can enjoy mint tea, tagines, and grilled trout fresh from the river. A second, more challenging trail continues beyond the main falls to reach the famous "Bridge of God" (God's Bridge), a spectacular natural stone arch formation.

The best time to visit Akchour is during the spring (March to May) when the snowmelt from the higher Rif peaks swells the river and the waterfalls are at their most powerful. Autumn (September to November) is also excellent, with pleasant hiking temperatures and fewer visitors. Summer can be busy with locals escaping the coastal heat, but the pools offer refreshing relief. The area has a wonderfully wild, undeveloped character compared to Morocco's more commercialised natural attractions, making it a favourite among travellers seeking an authentic mountain experience within easy reach of Chefchaouen.
