Smiha Gorge
High Atlas
Smiha Gorge is one of the High Atlas's lesser-known treasures, a deep incision in the limestone massif east of the Ourika Valley that rewards those who make the journey with genuine solitude and raw mountain beauty. Unlike the famous gorges of Dadès and Todra, Smiha sees only a handful of visitors each week. The approach is a rough dirt track that winds through juniper-studded hills and past scattered Berber homesteads before dropping into the gorge mouth, where the walls rise abruptly to 200 metres on either side.
The trail follows the stream that carved the gorge, threading through a corridor of polished rock where the light shifts from brilliant white at noon to deep indigo in the late afternoon. Sections of the path require careful footing over scree and slick water-worn stone, but there are no technical moves. The gorge opens and closes in a series of chambers, each with its own microclimate — one may be draped in moss and ferns, the next dry and echoing with the calls of Bonelli's eagles circling overhead.
Near the entrance, look for ancient petroglyphs etched into flat boulders — ibex, geometric patterns, and what appear to be hunting scenes carved by pastoral peoples who moved through these valleys centuries ago. There are no facilities, guardrails, or marked trails beyond the main gorge line. This is wild hiking in the truest sense. Carry a GPS or offline map, bring all your water (the stream needs purification), and tell someone your itinerary before you set out.
