Cascades Ourika

Sti Fadma, Ourika Valley

Cascades Ourika is the most accessible and popular hiking destination in the Ourika Valley, a green ribbon of terraced farmland and walnut groves that cuts into the High Atlas just south of Marrakech. The trail begins in the village of Setti Fadma, where the paved road ends and the valley narrows into a steep, rocky gorge. A well-trodden path follows the Ourika River upstream, passing beneath cliffs draped in maidenhair ferns and crossing the stream several times via simple rock steps and wooden footbridges.

Seven waterfalls mark the route, though only the first three are reachable on the standard guided walk. Each cascade plunges into a deep pool of emerald water, cold even in the height of summer. The lower falls are busy with day-trippers splashing in the shallows and picnicking on the flat rocks, but the upper falls require scrambling over boulders and wading through shallow channels — the effort is rewarded with quieter pools and the full sound of water echoing off the narrow canyon walls. A local guide is recommended for the upper sections, as the path becomes indistinct after the fourth waterfall.

The Ourika Valley is at its best in spring, when the snowmelt swells the river and the hillsides erupt in wildflowers. Summer brings intense heat in Marrakech and a corresponding surge of visitors seeking the valley's cool shade. Go early in the morning to avoid the worst of the crowds, and end your hike with grilled trout and mint tea at one of the many riverside restaurants in Setti Fadma. The valley is also home to several women's argan oil cooperatives worth visiting on the drive back.
