Mountain Sraghna

Mountain Sraghna rises from the central High Atlas like a natural fortress, its broad shoulders and long, rocky ridges offering some of the most satisfying ridge-walking in the region. The trailhead is near the small settlement of Amassine, a cluster of stone and mud-brick houses reached by a winding road that crosses the Oued Tessaout. From here the route climbs through a belt of holm oak and Atlas cedar, the air thick with the scent of resin and wild thyme, before breaking above the treeline onto open, windswept slopes.

The summit ridge runs roughly north–south, providing views in both directions: to the north, the green river valleys and terraced fields of the High Atlas; to the south, the brown expanse of the pre-Saharan steppe stretching toward the Jbel Saghro range. The hike is moderately strenuous, with a steady 700-metre elevation gain over 5 kilometres, but the path is clear and there are multiple spots to rest and take in the vast panorama. Spring brings a carpet of wild irises, poppies, and lavender to the lower slopes.

The area around Amassine is known for its semi-wild Barbary macaque population, which moves through the oak woodlands in small troops. They are generally shy but may be seen early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Local shepherds are friendly and accustomed to passing trekkers, though few visitors make it to this part of the Atlas. There are no formal trail markers or facilities — this is self-guided terrain best attempted with a map and GPS. The nearest accommodation is in Amassine, where basic gîte lodging is available.
