Morocco Rock Climbing

Todra Gorge, near the town of Tinghir in Morocco's southeast, is one of North Africa's premier rock climbing destinations — and an equally rewarding hiking area. The gorge's sheer limestone walls rise up to 300 metres on either side of the Todra River, creating a dramatic corridor of deep shadows, echoing cliffs and cool water. While the climbing routes draw international attention, the gorge floor and surrounding plateau offer outstanding hiking terrain with trails that follow the river, scramble over boulders and climb out onto the high desert rim.

The main gorge hike follows the river upstream from the village of Tizgui, threading between the vertical walls past date palms, oleander bushes and the ruins of ancient irrigation channels. After about 3 km the gorge opens into a wider valley with Berber hamlets and terraced fields — a landscape that has changed little in centuries. More ambitious hikers can take trails that ascend the plateau above the gorge, giving panoramic views across the Todra Valley towards the Dades Gorge and the Jebel Saghro range. The limestone geology means numerous caves and overhangs dot the cliffs, some of which have been used as seasonal shelters by shepherds for generations.

The best months for hiking here are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when temperatures are mild and the river flow is strong enough to fill the pools. Summer heat can be intense in the gorge, though the shaded cliff walls offer relief at lower levels. Tinghir, a short drive away, has excellent guesthouses and a vibrant weekly souk.
