Dades Hiking

Boumalne Dades, Dades Valley

The Dades Valley is one of Morocco's most dramatic landscapes, a deep rift carved through the High Atlas by the Oued Dades river. Hiking here means following the course of the gorge as it narrows into a spectacular canyon of pink, ochre, and terracotta rock layers. The road itself is famous — a sinuous ribbon of asphalt climbing past switchbacks and lookout points — but the real experience lies on foot, away from the asphalt, where the valley opens into hidden side canyons, terraced fields, and sleepy Berber settlements.

Trails range from easy riverside strolls through palm groves to moderate half-day ascents up the gorge walls, where the reward is a sweeping view of the entire valley. Along the way you'll pass crumbling mud-brick kasbahs, irrigation channels (khettara), and shepherds guiding small flocks of goats among the juniper and oleander scrub. Spring brings wildflowers and the rustle of poplar leaves; autumn softens the light to a warm amber that makes the red cliffs glow.

The village of Boumalne Dades serves as the main base, with a handful of gîtes and family-run guesthouses offering tagine dinners and rooftop terracés that look straight into the gorge. Most guided walks depart early to catch the morning light on the canyon walls. For the adventurous, a multi-day route connects the Dades Gorge with the Todra Gorge to the east, crossing the Atlas massif via the Tizi n'Tichka or Tizi n'Fedrhate passes.
