Mirador del Estrecho

Mirador del Estrecho occupies a position of almost mythical significance: the southernmost tip of Europe, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea and the African continent lies a mere 14 kilometres across the Strait of Gibraltar. From this windswept vantage point near Tarifa, the Rif Mountains of Morocco rise from the sea with startling clarity on clear days, their blue-grey ridges forming a continuous horizon that feels tantalisingly close.

The viewpoint is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The Strait is one of the world's most important migratory corridors, and from spring through autumn, the skies above the mirador fill with soaring storks, raptors, and honey buzzards making the crossing between continents. Below, the strait's powerful currents churn with marine life — pods of dolphins are a common sight, and the blow of a passing whale is not unusual during migration season. The constant wind, which makes Tarifa Europe's windsurfing capital, adds an element of raw energy to the experience.

Accessible by road a short distance from Tarifa's town centre, the viewpoint is equipped with interpretive panels that explain the strait's geological, biological, and historical significance. It is a place where the boundaries between continents blur, and where standing at the edge of Europe feels like standing at the edge of the world.
