Viewpoint of Fóia

At 902 metres above sea level, the Viewpoint of Fóia is the highest point in the Algarve, offering a perspective that could not be more different from the region's famous beaches. From this summit in the Serra de Monchique, the view stretches across a patchwork of cork oak forests, eucalyptus plantations, and small farmsteads all the way to the shimmering Atlantic Ocean on the southern horizon. On exceptionally clear days, it is even possible to glimpse the silhouette of the Serra da Estrela far to the north and the coast of the Algarve stretching from Sagres to Faro.

The summit is crowned by a cluster of telecommunication towers and an observation platform that provides safe and comfortable viewing. A small café and souvenir shop serve as a welcome rest stop for cyclists and drivers who make the winding ascent through the Monchique mountains. The air is noticeably cooler and cleaner than on the coast — a refreshing change during the hot summer months — and the surrounding hills are rich in birdlife, with booted eagles and Bonelli's eagles often circling the thermals overhead.

The drive up to Fóia is an experience in itself, winding through the Serra de Monchique's lush vegetation and passing the thermal spa town of Caldas de Monchique along the way. The viewpoint is a popular destination for paragliders, who launch from its slopes to ride the updrafts above the Algarve.
