Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego — "Point of Peace Viewpoint" — lives up to its name as one of the most serene and visually arresting locations in the Azores. Perched on the rugged northeastern coast of São Miguel island, this viewpoint looks out over a coastline of extraordinary drama: sheer green cliffs plunging into a deep blue ocean, with offshore islets and the distant profile of the Ilhéu da Mina completing the picture. What sets Ponta do Sossego apart is the beautifully designed garden that frames the viewing experience. Manicured hedges, colourful flower beds, and carefully placed stone benches invite visitors to sit and absorb the scene. The garden is laid out in a series of terraces that follow the contours of the cliff, with each level offering a different perspective on the coastline. A small chapel and a traditional stone windmill add cultural touches to the natural splendour, while interpretive panels explain the geology and ecology of this unique corner of the Azores.

The viewpoint is part of a network of miradouros along the coast of Nordeste, a municipality known as the "garden of the Azores" for its abundant flora and lush landscapes. The drive from the town of Nordeste follows winding coastal roads that themselves offer spectacular views at every turn. Ponta do Sossego is particularly magical on a clear day, when the ocean stretches in an unbroken blue to the horizon and the air carries the scent of salt, flowers, and damp earth — a true point of peace in the middle of the Atlantic.
