Surfiberia
Ericeira
Surfiberia operates along the wild, rocky coastline that falls away from the pine-clad slopes of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, a stretch of coast that pairs impossibly beautiful scenery with some of the finest surf in the Lisbon region. Unlike the broad sandy beaches of nearby Costa da Caparica, the breaks around Sintra are predominantly reef and point setups that require paddle fitness, wave judgment, and an ability to read shifting tide and swell conditions. This is not a place for beginners — it rewards intermediate and advanced surfers who can already paddle into green waves and are looking for quality, uncrowded sessions in a breathtaking environment.
The guiding service is built around small groups, typically no more than four surfers per guide. The team checks the various reefs and points — from the thumping right-hander at Praia Grande to the long, rippable walls at Cabo da Roca and the hollow left at Azenhas do Mar — and selects the most promising option based on swell direction, tide, and wind. The guides carry cameras and capture action shots throughout the session, which are included in the trip as digital downloads.
Beyond the surfing, Surfiberia offers a deeper experience of the Sintra region. Surf trips can be paired with visits to the Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, or simply a lunch of fresh grilled fish at one of the seaside restaurants overlooking the break you just surfed. The proximity to Lisbon — just 30 minutes by car — means you're never far from the city, yet the Sintra coast feels a world apart, with its dark cliffs, turquoise water, and the haunting call of the Atlantic wind through the pines.
## Sintra Surfing Spots Key breaks in the area include Praia Grande (a powerful right-hand reef break), Cabo da Roca (Europe's westernmost point, with exposed reefs working on big swell), and Azenhas do Mar (a scenic left that peels along the cliff). All require careful tide management and respect for the rocks.
## Surfing Conditions The Sintra coast picks up swell from all quadrants of the Atlantic. Summer brings smaller, clean waves in the 1-2 metre range, while autumn and winter deliver larger, more powerful swell that can reach 3-5 metres at the exposed reefs. Wetsuits are essential year-round.
## Booking a Trip Surfiberia offers half-day and full-day guided surf trips, with all transport and equipment provided. Booking is essential as group sizes are strictly limited. The season runs from March to November, with the best conditions typically from September to April.
