Aljezur Surf Spot
Aljezur, Algarve
Aljezur Surf Spot refers to the cluster of exceptional beach breaks along the coastline of the Vicentine Coast Natural Park, anchored by the historic town of Aljezur. The main beaches — Amado, Monte Clérigo, and Arrifana — each offer a distinct surf experience, but they share a common character: powerful, fast-breaking waves over clean sand, framed by dramatic dark cliffs and backed by protected natural parkland. This is surfing in one of Europe's last wild coastal environments, and the feeling of isolation and connection to nature is palpable.
The waves here are best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The beaches are exposed to the full fetch of the Atlantic, and the swell arrives with real power. Praia do Amado, in particular, is famous for its long, grinding left-hander that peels along the southern end of the bay — a wave that can barrel cleanly on the right swell. Monte Clérigo offers a more forgiving beach break with multiple peaks, while Arrifana is a stunning cove with a consistent right-hander that wraps around the northern headland. All three breaks demand respect for the ocean, with strong rips and currents common on bigger days.
The town of Aljezur adds a compelling cultural dimension to the surf trip. The 10th-century Moorish castle sits on the hill above the town, offering panoramic views across the surrounding valleys and out to the Atlantic. The town itself has a growing selection of surf shops, cafes, and restaurants, but it has resisted overdevelopment, retaining the sleepy, authentic character that makes the Vicentine Coast so special. It is a place to surf hard, eat well, and sleep deeply.
## Amado Beach Praia do Amado is widely considered the best wave in the Aljezur area. It works best on a west-to-southwest swell with north-to-east winds. The left-hander at the south end of the beach is the main attraction, offering long, fast rides over a sand-and-rock bottom. Low tide can be shallow and heavy.
## Monte Clérigo This is the most accessible beach from Aljezur town. It offers consistent beach-break peaks that work across a range of swell sizes. The protected northern end can be good for beginners on smaller days, while the exposed central and southern sections offer punchier waves for intermediates.
## Arrifana Arrifana is a beautiful cove sheltered by high cliffs. The wave is a right-hander that breaks off the northern headland and wraps into the bay. It works best on a northwest swell with easterly winds and is at its best from mid-to-high tide. The scenery here is spectacular.
