Algarve Surf School

Algarve Surf School is a well-established surf teaching operation covering the southern coast of Portugal, with bases at several of the region's most consistent and accessible beaches. The Algarve's south coast has a distinct microclimate compared to the wilder west coast — the waves are generally smaller and more forgiving, making this an ideal zone for beginners and intermediate surfers looking to build mileage in a safe, warm environment. The classic sandstone cliffs, hidden coves, and vast sandy beaches create a backdrop that is unmistakably Mediterranean in feel, even though the water you're surfing is very much Atlantic.

The school's instructors follow a structured, safety-first teaching methodology. Beginners start on soft-top boards in whitewater, learning paddling technique, pop-ups, and stance before progressing to catching unbroken waves. All equipment is included and the school maintains a modern fleet of boards and wetsuits sized to fit everyone from small children to larger adults. Lessons run in two-hour sessions, with options for weekly course packages that build skills progressively through the week.

What Algarve Surf School may lack in the dramatic big-wave reputation of the west coast, it more than compensates for in accessibility and hospitality. The water is noticeably warmer here — summer sea temperatures can reach 22-24°C, meaning a thin wetsuit or even just a rash guard is sufficient from June through September. The beaches are backed by vibrant towns with excellent restaurants, nightlife, and accommodation, making this a surf holiday that balances perfectly with Algarve's other attractions.

## The Algarve Coast The school operates primarily at beaches between Lagos and Faro, including Meia Praia, Praia da Luz, and Praia de Vale do Lobo. These beaches offer long, gentle waves with multiple take-off zones spread over wide sandy stretches.

## Surf Season The best time for beginners is April to October when winds are lighter and wave heights average 0.5-1.5 metres. Experienced surfers will find more challenging conditions from November to March when winter storms push larger swell into the coast.

## Equipment and Gear The school provides all equipment in lesson prices. Wetsuits are 3/2mm in spring/autumn and springsuits or rash vests in summer. Board bags and rash guards are available for purchase at the shop.
