Portugal Surf School
Portugal, mehrere Standorte
Portugal Surf School operates on the vast golden sands of Costa da Caparica, the long barrier beach that shields Lisbon's southern approach from the full force of the Atlantic. Stretching for over 15 kilometres, this beach system offers an almost endless variety of sandbank-formed peaks that shift with the seasons and tides. The consistent northwest swell wraps around the Caparica headland, producing clean, manageable waves that make this one of the best places in Portugal to learn to surf while also offering enough punch for intermediates and advanced surfers on the right day.
The school's base is strategically positioned near the main beach access at Praia do CDS, where the waves tend to be most reliable. The team of ISA-certified instructors brings decades of combined experience, teaching in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, and German. Lessons follow a progressive structure: beginners start with safety awareness, beach drills, and whitewater practice, before advancing into green wave take-offs and eventually turns and maneuvers. More experienced surfers can book guiding sessions to the best banks of the day or coaching to refine specific aspects of their surfing.
Perhaps the greatest appeal of Portugal Surf School is its location. After a morning surf, you can be sitting in a Lisbon café in under 20 minutes, exploring the historic Alfama district by afternoon, and enjoying a world-class dinner in the city by evening. The contrast between the raw Atlantic coastline and the vibrant European capital just across the Tagus estuary creates a surf experience that is genuinely unique — the cultural depth of a major city paired with the freedom and simplicity of life on the waves.
## Surf Lesson Bookings The school operates year-round, with daily group lessons (2 hours) and private coaching sessions available. Equipment is included in all lesson prices, and the school maintains a fleet of over 100 boards ranging from 8-foot foamies to performance shortboards. Advanced booking is recommended during peak summer months and holidays.
## Surfing Conditions Costa da Caparica faces west, receiving the full force of Atlantic swell. Wave heights typically range from 1-3 metres, though larger pulses can produce 4-metre faces on exposed banks. The predominant north wind creates clean conditions at the main breaks, while strong southwesterlies can cause onshore chop.
## Best Beginner Waves The banks directly in front of the main beach entrances are generally the most forgiving, offering long, slow-breaking whitewater ideal for beginners. As you gain confidence, you can paddle to more defined peaks further up or down the beach where the waves stand up more steeply before crumbling into fast, fun walls.
