Baleal Surf Camp Peniche
Ferrel, Peniche
Baleal Surf Camp Peniche sits in the small fishing village of Ferrel, on the isthmus that connects the mainland to the Baleal peninsula — an area that has become synonymous with world-class Portuguese surfing. The camp occupies a purpose-built property just a few hundred metres from the beach, with modern rooms designed around a large communal pool and sun deck that serve as the social heart of the operation. The atmosphere is relaxed and international, with guests from across Europe and beyond drawn by Peniche's reputation as one of Europe's finest and most consistent surf destinations.
The surf in this area is driven by the Peniche peninsula's unique geography, which catches swell from the full sweep of the Atlantic while the prevailing north winds hold the waves open and clean. Within a 5-minute drive are the legendary Supertubos — a fast, hollow beach break that hosts the MEO Rip Curl Pro World Surf League event — as well as the long, rolling walls of Baleal itself, the sheltered reef at Consolação, and the wind-deflecting point at Peniche de Cima. This variety means there's always a workable wave, from 1-metre beginner rollers to the heavy barreling tubes that challenge the best surfers in the world.
The camp's coaching program is comprehensive and progressive. Beginners receive dedicated attention in small groups, learning safety, positioning, and take-off technique in the forgiving waves at the Baleal beach breaks. Intermediate and advanced surfers are guided to more challenging peaks, with coaching focused on turn technique, speed generation, and barrel riding. Evening video sessions help break down each surfer's performance, and the weekly schedule includes yoga, surf theory classes, and guided excursions to other nearby breaks when conditions align.
## Camp Accommodation The camp offers twin and double rooms, dormitory options, and private suites. All rooms include air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and secure storage for boards and wetsuits. Weekly packages include accommodation, breakfast, daily surf coaching, and airport transfers from Lisbon.
## Surfing Peniche Peniche is famous for Supertubos, considered the best barrel in Europe. It's a shallow, fast-breaking wave over a sand-and-pebble bottom that produces hollow tubes of up to 2-3 metres on a good swell. The right-hander at Baleal offers a mellower alternative, peeling for 100+ metres over sand.
## Best Time to Surf Peak season is September to April when the Atlantic delivers maximum swell. Summer is smaller but still surfable, with clean 1-2 metre waves on the northern exposures. Water temperature ranges from 14°C in winter to 20°C in summer. A 4/3mm wetsuit is recommended for winter, a 3/2mm for summer.
