Trilho São Julião

Setúbal, Arrábida

The Trilho São Julião is a spectacular coastal loop within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, one of Portugal's most treasured protected landscapes. The trail traces the wild Atlantic shoreline between the Praia de São Julião and the Cabo Raso headland, offering an exhilarating mix of cliff-edge walking, sheltered woodland sections, and detours down to empty sandy coves. The sound of waves crashing against the basalt and limestone cliffs provides a constant soundtrack as the trail winds between the sea and the densely vegetated hillside.

The route climbs onto exposed headlands where the wind whips in from the open Atlantic, then dips into sheltered gullies where maritime pines and strawberry trees create a cool, fragrant canopy. Old military installations and coastal batteries from the 19th and 20th centuries dot the landscape — relics of the strategic importance of the Lisbon coastline. Peregrine falcons nest in the cliffs, and in autumn migrating seabirds pass close to shore, making this a rewarding route for birdwatchers.

The Trilho São Julião is best hiked in spring or autumn when temperatures are mild and the vegetation is lush. The full loop takes around two to three hours, but allow extra time for swimming stops at the secluded beaches and photography at the Cabo Raso lighthouse — one of the finest viewpoints on the Lisbon coast.
