Boardwalk
Comporta, Setúbal
The Ria Formosa Boardwalk is a beautifully constructed wooden walkway that threads through one of Portugal's most important wetland ecosystems, the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Starting near Faro's Quinta do Lago beach access, the elevated trail extends over the lagoon's salt pans and tidal channels, keeping walkers dry while offering an immersive experience of this dynamic coastal landscape. The boardwalk makes the fragile marsh environment accessible without disturbing the wildlife that depends on it.
Birdwatchers will find the boardwalk particularly rewarding. The Ria Formosa is a vital stopover on the East Atlantic Flyway, and depending on the season, visitors can spot greater flamingos feeding in the shallows, black-winged stilts picking through the mud, and little egrets stalking fish in the channels. The salt pans — still worked in the traditional manner — add a geometric, almost otherworldly beauty to the landscape, their colours shifting from pale pink to deep orange depending on the algae and brine shrimp concentrations.
The walk is flat, short and fully accessible, making it perfect for families, photographers and anyone with limited mobility. Late afternoon is the ideal time to visit, when the low sun casts golden light across the lagoon and the bird activity peaks. Combine it with a stop at one of the nearby beachside restaurants for a complete Ria Formosa experience.
