Rocha da Pena
Madeira, Santana
Rising abruptly from the gently undulating Barrocal landscape of the Algarve interior, Rocha da Pena is a striking flat-topped limestone escarpment that dominates the horizon for miles around. The 9 km loop trail circumnavigates the entire massif, offering constantly changing perspectives on its vertical cliffs, wooded slopes, and the sweeping panorama of southern Portugal — from the Serra do Caldeirão in the north to the Atlantic coast on clear days.
The trail alternates between exposed sections along the cliff base, where caves and rock overhangs bear traces of human habitation stretching back to the Neolithic, and shaded stretches through cork oak and carob woodland. Spring transforms the slopes into a tapestry of wildflowers — orchids, rockroses, and irises among the most conspicuous. The northern face, with its sheer limestone buttresses, is a popular climbing destination with routes ranging from moderate to challenging.
From the top of the escarpment — reached via a short but steep ascent trail — the reward is a commanding 360° view that takes in the entire Algarve, from the distant Serra de Monchique to the shimmering Atlantic. The hike is a perfect half-day outing from Loulé or Faro, combining geological interest, cultural history, and spectacular scenery.
