Buracas do Casmilo / Vale das Buracas
Sicó, Centro
The Buracas do Casmilo, also known as Vale das Buracas ("Valley of Holes"), is a remarkable geological landscape in the limestone massif north of Condeixa-a-Nova. The short loop trail winds through a dense mosaic of Mediterranean scrub and exposed karst, where rainwater has dissolved the limestone over millions of years to create a honeycomb of caves, dolines (sinkholes), and natural arches. The terrain feels almost lunar in places, with jagged rock outcrops rising suddenly from the aromatic maquis of rosemary, lavender, and cistus.
The name translates to "Casmilo's Holes," a colloquial reference to the numerous cavities that dot the valley floor and walls. Some are shallow depressions barely a few metres across; others plunge into dark chambers that invite careful exploration. The trail is punctuated by several viewpoints offering sweeping panoramas across the Ceira River valley toward the Serra da Lousã in the distance.
This is an excellent short excursion for families and geology enthusiasts alike, combining accessibility with genuine natural wonder. Combine a visit with the nearby Roman ruins of Conímbriga — one of the best-preserved Roman settlements in Portugal — for a full day of history and nature from the Coimbra base.
