Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

Perched atop one of Lisbon's highest hills, Miradouro da Senhora do Monte offers what many consider the most breathtaking panoramic view of the Portuguese capital. At 110 metres above sea level, this viewpoint in the Graça neighbourhood provides an uninterrupted 360-degree vista that takes in the São Jorge Castle, the sprawling Alfama district, the shimmering Tagus River, and the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge. Unlike some of the more tourist-packed miradouros, Senhora do Monte retains a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere that rewards those who make the gentle uphill walk.

The viewpoint takes its name from the small hermitage dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Monte that has stood on this spot since the 12th century, later rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. A mosaic portrait of the saint adorns the wall, adding a touch of local devotion to the scenic experience. Benches line the terrace, inviting visitors to sit and watch the city slowly change colour as the sun arcs overhead — this is a favourite spot for both sunrise and sunset, when the light paints the rooftops in warm tones of gold and amber.

From here, the city unfolds like a living map: the castle crowns the hill to the south, the Baixa grid stretches toward the river, and the hills of Alcântara and Belém rise in the distance. The relative quiet of the neighbourhood — a residential area with few cafés or souvenir shops — means you can linger without the crowds. A short walk downhill leads to the bustling Miradouro da Graça, making it easy to visit both viewpoints in a single afternoon.
